Kung Fury surpassed all expectations when it was released on YouTube last month after raising $630,000 on Kickstarter – it’s already been watched over 16 million times.
As director David Sandberg put it, Kung Fury is “an homage and a love letter to the 80’s”, and what a love letter it is. If you took all of the greatest things about 80’s action movies, put them in a blender, and then poured the result into a bowl of pure awesomeness, Kung Fury is what you would get. Here are our top 11 reasons why it’s not only the greatest action movie of the 80’s, but of all time.
11. Laser Raptors
Some action movies have dinosaurs. Some action movies have lasers. Have you ever seen one that has dinosaurs that shoot lasers out of their eyes? I didn’t think so. That alone is enough to end the discussion, but then there’s also…
10. Thor and his Pecs
Epic.
9. The Origin Story
Every hero needs a good origin story, but Kung Fury’s surpasses them all. After his partner gets killed in the line of duty, Kung Fury gets struck by lightning AND bitten by a cobra, instantly having visions of Shaolin Monks and learning of the Kung Fury prophecy. Radioactive spiders and dead parents don’t come close.
8. Triceracop
He’s the best damn partner a cop could have, and he only shoots bad guys in the crotch.
7. Programmer Jokes
Hackerman has to hack time to send Kung Fury back to kill Adolf Hitler. But despite being the greatest hacker of all time, even he has bugs in his code now and then. Instead of squaring MC, he accidentally cubes it – inadvertently sending Kung Fury back to the Viking Age. The lesson? Always test before running your code live.
6. This animated sequence that feels like every cartoon from your childhood:
When Kung Fury temporarily dies, we’re treated to a trippy as hell animated sequence where he rides through space to Heaven, where he encounters his spirit animal Cobra. But when Cobra refuses to send him back to Earth, Kung Fury threatens to arrest him…for obstruction of justice. Which brings us to…
5. The best one-liners…
Knock knock. Who’s there? Knock…les. PUNCH
4. Badass Viking Women
No damsels in distress here. Barbarianna and Katana ride giant wolves and tyrannosaurs as they guard their home from laser raptors with their miniguns and uzis. In other action movies, the hero is usually saving the girl. Here, they’re kicking as much ass as he is.
3. It looks like you’re watching it on VHS
Sandberg and his team did an amazing job animating the movie, and even added static visual and audio effects to make it feel like you’re watching the movie on a scratchy VHS. Nostalgiatastic.
2. The Soundtrack
In addition to the amazing synth music by Mitch Murder and Lost Years that fits oh-so-perfectly with the film, the music video to True Survivor, the movie’s theme song, is almost as good as the entire movie itself. It’s amazing that The Hoff came on to work on the project, and gives the film even more of a classic 80’s feel.
1. David Sandberg
Already an experienced producer and animator for TV commercials, Sandberg quit his job to do something he loved. He put $5000 of his own money into the project and worked on it with friends as they were available. He showed us that if you have talent and passion, you can make your dreams come true, no matter how crazy they are.
